What does "civil service" mean?
In Memphis, the vast majority of City employees are civil service, meaning they have some built-in protections (such as the right to form a union of their peers) and are covered under city employment rules.
So, library workers are "appointed"?
Yes. Library staff are classified as appointed, a designation that has historically usually applied only to high-level political appointees (i.e The Director.) This classification leaves us more vulnerable: we can be disciplined or fired without cause, and we have fewer workplace protections.
When will this issue be on the ballot?
We are expected to be on the November 2026 ballot! We will have plenty of canvassing opportunties where we will be explaining our issue to inform the Memphis community. Be there on election date to vote for our civil service rights! Election Day is November 3rd! Register to vote if you haven't already!
How does this effect me?
The library and its workers our integral to the community. We not only provide book recommendations and encourage you to read more and put on wonderful programming, we also assist patrons in applying for jobs, filing for unemployment, various computer assistance, and housing and shelter assistance through our LINC 211 department. We also are a safe third space for kids and teens in a time where third spaces are disappearing around the country.
